“Hey! You!”

Jolatha turned quickly, her feet skidding against the hard tarmac of the street. The sun blinded her eyes for a moment, before clearing to reveal the long-gone figure of Gamie, her first friend in this wasteland. Far down the street, dangling from a balcony, they waved with a grin.

At her side, Icy muttered, “You know them?”

Jolatha nodded, and waved back, lowering her spear to the ground. She watched Gamie jump down from the balcony, wincing hard at the painful sound of body on pavement, and braced herself as Gamie ran towards her.

She considered raising her spear again, but before she could even plan a response she was pulled into a tight hug, arms of a backpack pressed into her neck and a tangle of hair in her face.

“Oh, I missed you Jolie!” Gamie sang. “My favourite girl, where’ve you been!”
